In a significant move ahead of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, the Election Commission has announced that polling booths may be set up inside select multi-storey residential apartment complexes across the state. According to initial plans, polling stations could be established in approximately 78 apartment buildings.
The Commission stated that the final list of residential buildings where polling booths will be created will be released on 25 February. However, officials also clarified that the number may be revised after further review.
Low Voter Turnout in Apartment Areas a Key Concern
The Election Commission of India observed that voter participation tends to be lower in apartment-dominated urban areas when polling stations are located at a distance. Residents, particularly senior citizens, working professionals, and persons with mobility challenges, often find it inconvenient to travel to designated booths.
Decision Aimed at Increasing Voter Participation
The move is expected to:
- Improve accessibility for voters
- Encourage higher turnout in urban areas
- Assist elderly and differently-abled citizens
- Reduce logistical inconvenience for residents
The Commission emphasized that the primary objective of this initiative is to increase voter turnout and make the electoral process more accessible.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reportedly expressed objections to the proposal. Despite this, the Election Commission has maintained that the decision is purely administrative and intended to enhance democratic participation.
Preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections are gaining momentum, with further announcements expected in the coming weeks.
